How coaching differs from therapy

Both are conversations, so they’re easy to confuse. But they’re meant for different moments, and choosing the right one saves you time.
Therapy
Provided by doctors or mental health professionals. Therapy can diagnose and treat, and helps you heal what is hurting you, including things that started long ago.
Coaching
For people who are doing okay and want to move towards a specific goal: a new career, doing well in a new role, getting their balance back. A coach doesn’t diagnose or treat. A coach asks, keeps the pace, and helps you turn intentions into action.
When to see a professional first
- You have felt low, sleepless or anxious for weeks.
- Everyday tasks have become hard.
- You have thoughts of harming yourself. In that case, seek help now: call the 115 emergency number in Vietnam or go to the nearest hospital.
Can you do both?
Yes, if your professional agrees. Therapy helps you get steady; coaching helps you move on. A responsible coach will tell you plainly when what you need lies outside coaching.
